Para aqueles que ainda não sabem, tem uma padaria portuguesa em uma rua próxima ao supermercado Maxi e ao Caisse Desjardins no Boulevard Saint-Joseph (seguindo em frente depois de passar pela Galeria de Hull).

O nome dela, para variar, é "Padaria Lusa" e lá você encontra pães fresquinhos, povilho, farinha de rosca (chamada pelos portugueses de "pão elevado"), guaraná Antártica, temperos e doces.

Vale a pena fazer uma visita para conhecer.

Ônibus

Oi gente!
Resolvi escrever um pouquinho sobre o sistema público de transporte! Algumas informações:
* Existem 2 empresas de ônibus. A STO (Gatineau) (www.sto.ca) e a OC Transport (Ottawa) (http://www.octranspo.com/).
* Os ônibus funcionam muito bem. Várias pessoas que possuem carros preferem trabalhar de ônibus porque os estacionamentos são caros e a opção do ônibus fica mais barata.
* Você pode pagar a passagem de várias maneiras: passe mensal, ticket ou dinheiro. O passe mensal custará $74 para adultos a partir de setembro. Os tickets podem ser comprados em depanneurs e custam $2.70 cada. Se optar por pagar no ônibus, a tarifa é de $3.15 e deve ser paga com o valor exato (eles não dão troco).
* Quando você precisar pegar mais de um ônibus para chegar ao seu destino final, não esqueça de solicitar um transfer ao motorista. Com esse papel você não precisa pagar outra passagem!
* Os ônibus com os horários dos ônibus são distribuídos para que a pessoa conheça os horários que os ônibus irão passar. Geralmente eles são bem precisos, mas o próprio livro indica que pode haver uma variação (geralmente 5 minutos - para mais ou para menos). Os livros para o início de setembro já estão sendo distribuídos nos ônibus e nos pontos de venda do passe mensal.
* Se você não souber quando passará o próximo ônibus, é só ligar no Infobus. Cada parada possui um número diferente sinalizado na placa. É só ligar e é possível ouvir uma mensagem com todos os ônibus que passarão por lá e o tempo que eles levarão para chegar. Muito bacana, né?
* No verão a quantidade de ônibus diminui, ou seja, eles demoram mais para passar. No outono/inverno eles voltam com força total!
* Alguns ônibus de Ottawa têm uma espécie de bagageiro para levar bicicletas. Isso bem que poderia ser adotado em Gatineau também, né?

Não tive oportunidade ainda de conferir, mas recebi uma propaganda de um lugar chamado "Sultan Supermarket" em Ottawa que oferece produtos importados de todos os cantos do mundo.

O anúncio informa que vende farinha de milho (para o cuscuz brasileiro), herva mate (para os gaúchos), farinhas, sucos de goiaba e maracujá, sazón, até goiabada (em espanhol, mermelada de guayaba)...

Vale a pena dar uma conferida. Busquei algo na minha área em Ottawa e não consegui encontrar nada. Parece que funciona mais para quem está em Toronto, ou em Hamilton.

Ontario Public Service (OPS) Internship Program for Internationally Trained Professionals

To encourage Ontario businesses to tap into the talents of newcomers, the Ontario government is leading by example. The province is participating in an internship program that provides internationally trained professionals with an opportunity to combine their knowledge acquired in jurisdictions around the world with Canadian experience.

Starting in the fall of 2006, newcomers with a minimum of three years of international work experience became eligible for a placement of up to six months within the Ontario Public Service. To establish this first-ever provincial internship program for the internationally trained, the Ontario government works with Career Bridge to place up to 70 interns in a wide variety of fields including finance, chemistry, business administration, communications and environmental sciences. All candidates will be selected from a database and will be screened for employment status, language ability and educational credentials.

The Career Bridge Program

Career Bridge is a program run by the Career Edge Organization, a not-for-profit organization that operates in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Hamilton. The organization works to eliminate employment barriers for qualified, experienced newcomers.

How to apply

Internationally trained professionals interested in becoming an intern in the OPS Internship Program must apply directly to Career Bridge to become a Career Bridge candidate. Once in the Career Bridge candidate database, individuals will be able to apply for available internships within the Ontario Public Service. Career Bridge is an innovative internship program designed to address the dilemma of “no Canadian experience, no job; no job, no Canadian experience” that prevents many skilled immigrants from contributing to Canada’s economy.

Internships arranged through the Career Bridge program break this unproductive cycle and provide a crucial bridge between the international and Canadian workplace. Career Bridge eliminates significant employment barriers often faced by qualified, experienced professionals who are eager and ready to resume their careers in Canada.
Career Bridge internships are paid positions that last for 4, 6, 9 or 12 months for job-ready immigrants that are legally able to work in Canada.
The internship program is a response to a concern that Canadian businesses often overlook or underutilize the talents of highly-qualified professionals who are recent arrivals from abroad.

The Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration within the Ontario Public Service is now offering internships through the Career Bridge program. To be considered for these internships, you must meet the requirements for the Career Bridge program.

NOTE: Before you begin, please ensure that you have an up-to-date résumé and general cover letter ready to upload as part of your application.

The Career Bridge Program is designed to help internationally trained professionals obtain Canadian experience in their field through paid internships. In order to participate in this program you must:

1. Fill out the registration form online (if you meet ALL of the criteria listed below).
2. Attend a pre-screening interview to determine your eligibility.
3. Once admitted into the pool of registrants, you will need to apply to available internship opportunities.

Please note that these steps apply to all Career Bridge internships, including The Ministry of Citizenship & Immigration internships within The Ontario Public Sector.

Check EACH of the following requirements to see if you qualify for the Career Bridge program:

• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
• Been in Canada no longer than 3 years
• Have a minimum of 3 years international work experience in your field
• Must be able to attend a screening interview in person in the Greater Toronto.
• Minimum bachelor's degree with Canadian equivalency assessment.

Dicas de supermercados bons em Ottawa

Com relação àqueles dois supermercados em Ottawa que têm bons preços e variedade de comida e temperos de várias partes do mundo, o Bulk Barn e o Food Basics, veja abaixo o endereço deles (um está ao lado do outro) e os telefones para contato.

Eses supermercados foram recomendados pela Tatiana e todo o nosso grupo fez uma primeira grande compra por lá no mês de maio passado. O Bulk Barn vende de tudo a granel, desde tapioca, queijo parmesão ralado, farinhas, temperos, até confeites e doces. O Food Basics é um supermercado grande, mas que tem bons preços e tem uma oferta muito boa de alimentos importados de muitos países por um preço mais em conta. Vale realmente a pena para quem ainda não os conhece.

Ah, sim, detalhe, no Bulk Barn você encontra um "pé-de-moleque" fabricado no Canadá que dá para matar as saudades do autêntico brasileiro.
