IMIGRANTES ESPECIALIZADOS EM TI RECEBEM APOIO DO GOVERNO CANADENSE

A dificuldade em entrar para o mercado de trabalho deverá ser menor daqui para frente. Pelo menos para alguns profissionais internacionais da província de Ontário. Desde março deste ano, profissionais altamente qualificados da área de informática recém-chegados ao Canadá, contam com um apoio extra na busca por um bom emprego. O governo do Canadá, o ICTC (Information and Communications Technology Council) e a JVS Toronto, ambas as organizações sem fins lucrativos, se uniram para auxiliar imigrantes dessa área a desenvolver as competências necessárias para obter um melhor espaço no mercado canadense.

Como? Por meio do Programa de Treinamento IWES (Integrated Work Experience Strategy), iniciativa que oferecerá seis semanas de aulas e workshops que focam, sobretudo, a inteligência cultural corporativa, a comunicação e o networking. Até dicas de comportamento, são passadas aos trabalhadores da área de Tecnologia da Informação formados no exterior e que estejam atualmente desempregados ou subempregados no Canadá. O primeiro programa foi realizado em 2009 em Vancouver, e teve 29 participantes de vários países. O resultado não poderia ser melhor - 90% da turma encontraram boas ofertas de emprego na área. Agora, o IWES é oferecido na Província de Ontário, mais precisamente na cidade de Markham, na Região Metropolitana de Toronto. A primeira turma iniciada em abril, conta com dois brasileiros. Ao final do programa, o aluno segue para um estágio de no mínimo três meses em uma empresa do setor, sempre acompanhado por um mentor.

“Estamos criando ótimas novas oportunidades para recém-chegados contribuírem com suas habilidades e talentos com empregadores do crescente setor de tecnologia de Ontário”, comenta o Ministro de Cidadania e Imigração de Ontário, Dr. Eric Hoskins. Essa parceria entre indústria, governo e associações sem fins lucrativos, vai ajudar profissionais internacionais capacitados a desenvolverem o que precisam para ter sucesso no mercado de trabalho canadense. Além disso, eles poderão aumentar o grau de auto-estima e confiança em questões sociais, econômicas e culturais junto á sociedade canadense. E assim então, conseguirem um emprego de acordo com sua formação e expectativa.

A data para fechamento das inscrições da próxima turma do Programa IWES será no dia 20 de agosto. O objetivo é capacitar de 100 a 150 profissionais em até três anos de programa. Para ser aceito no Programa IWES, o candidato deve ser residente permanente no Canadá, ter formação acadêmica e experiência profissional em TI no seu país de origem, estar elegível para poder trabalhar no Canadá, ter conhecimento avançado da língua inglesa, além de outros requisitos. IMMIGRANTS SPECIALIZED IN I.T. GET SUPPORT FROM THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT

Difficulties in getting into the work market should decrease from here on – at least for some international professionals in the province of Ontario. Since March of this year, highly qualified professionals in the computer industry, who have recently arrived in Canada, will get extra support in their job search. The Canadian government, the ICTC (Information and Communications Technology Council) and JVS Toronto, all not-for-profit organizations, are getting together to help immigrants in this area develop the skills necessary to get a better position in the Canadian market.

How? Through the IWES (Integrated Work Experience Strategy), an initiative that offers six weeks of courses and workshops that focus on, above all, cultural corporate intelligence, communication and networking. Even interpersonal behavioural tips are passed on to workers in the Information Technology field, who graduated abroad and who are, right now, unemployed or underemployed in Canada. The first program took place in 2009, in Vancouver, and had 29 participants from various countries. The results could not have been better: 90% of the group got good job offers in their area. Now, the IWES is being offered in the province of Ontario; more precisely in the city of Markham, in the metropolitan region of Toronto. There are two Brazilians in the first group, which began in April. At the end of the program, each student will go on a job placement for a minimum of three months, always accompanied by the mentor.

“We are creating new opportunities for newly arrived immigrants, contributing to their abilities and talents with rising employers in the technological fields in Ontario”, states the Ontario Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Dr. Eric Hoskins. This partnership with the industry, government and not-for-profit organizations will help able international professionals develop what they need in order to be successful in the Canadian job market. The program will help raise their self-esteem and confidence, help them to integrate socially, economically and culturally into Canadian society and get a job according that fits their qualifications and expectations.

The closing date for registration in the next IWES Program is the 20^th of August. The objective is to qualify 100 to 150 professionals in at least three years. To be accepted in the IWES Program, besides other requirements, the candidate must be a permanent resident in Canada, have an academic background and professional IT experience in their home country, be eligible to work in Canada, and have advanced knowledge of the English language. Os profissionais da área de informática recém-chegados à província de Ontário contam a partir de agora com um programa que pretende facilitar a integração ao mercado de trabalho.

Desde abril, o Conselho de Informática do Canadá (ICTC) oferece o programa Estratégia Integrada de Experiência de Trabalho (IEWS).

O IEWS é treinamento intensivo para imigrantes qualificados da área de tecnologia da informação, que une trabalhadores, empresas, governo e organizações não-governamentais num esforço conjunto.

O primeiro módulo do programa na província de Ontário já está em andamento e conta com a presença de dois brasileiros, entre eles o paulista Cláudio Shimabukuro (foto).

As inscrições para o segundo treinamento oferecido pelo ICTC estão abertas e vão até o dia 14 de maio.

Rate of crimes against children also among highest in Quebec

Children and youth in Gatineau are 50 per cent more likely to be crime victims than young people in Ottawa, according to a Statistics Canada study of violent crime.

But both communities pale in comparison to the rate in Saint John, N.B., which reported 2,075 child crime victims per 100,000 people, the highest in Canada.

The newly released study by Lucie Ogrodnik of the Canadian Centre For Justice Statistics showed there were 1,032 incidents of violent crime and sexual assault involving children and youths under 18 per 100,000 people in Gatineau in 2008.

That compares to 673 victims of crime per 100,000 people in Ottawa.

In 2008, more than 75,000 Canadian children and youths were crime victims, according to the study. That means that 1,111 out of every 100,000 people were victims of violence.

The rate of crime against children in Gatineau was among the highest in Quebec.

Montreal reported a rate of 928 crimes per 100,000 people, Trois-Rivières 938 and Sherbrooke 760 crimes per 100,000. Only Saguenay reported a higher rate of 1,141 child victims for every 100,000 people.

The crimes reported included physical assault, sexual assault, homicide, attempted homicide, robbery, extortion, criminal harassment, uttering threats, forcible confinement, kidnapping and abduction. The next study of crime statistics involving child victims is to be published in July.

The study showed that Ottawa was among the safest cities for children in Canada. Gatineau was slightly better than the national average. Guelph had 656 youthful crime victims per 100,000 people, the lowest rate in Canada.

Lucie Ogrodnik said more Gatineau children than Ottawa youngsters may be listed as crime victims because the reporting rate could be higher on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River.

"In places like Gatineau, people may be more aware that these things need to be reported to the police," Ogrodnik said. "Or this may be an example of increased victimization and increased crime reporting.

"We know from victimization surveys that young people just don't report any kind of criminal activity to the police. Children who are younger than 10 just don't realize that they should be reporting offences to the police."

Ogrodnik said it is difficult to conclude that Gatineau children are more likely to be crime victims because of different income levels or their parents' unemployment.

"We have tried to look at whether there are links between levels of income or education and victimization and there don't seem to be any," Ogrodnik said. "People can become victims no matter which walk of life they come from.

"There could be some gang-related activity that was happening in Gatineau in 2008 that didn't occur in Ottawa. We are not quite sure."

Ogrodnik said physical assault was the most common crime committed against children followed by sexual assault. She said that the people committing the assaults were usually family members, friends or acquaintances.

Males between 15 and 17 were the most frequent victims of robbery, another common crime against children. Ogrodnik said the people committing the robberies were typically other teenagers or young adults 18 to 24.

The study listed 41,926 physical assaults, 13,641 sexual assaults, 8,713 cases of uttering threats, 6,845 robberies, 59 homicides and 57 attempted homicides involving children and youths across Canada in 2008.

Jacques Dionne, a Université du Québec en Outaouais psychologist who has 40 years of experience with adolescents, said only part of the difference in crime rates against children can be explained by different attitudes toward crime in the two cities.

"In the Outaouais region, the reporting of crime to the Director of Youth Protection (the Quebec equivalent of the Children's Aid Society) is among the highest in the province," Dionne said. "More people are likely to report child abuse than in other parts of Quebec.

"It is clear that part of the difference is related to poverty. Economic conditions are worse in Gatineau than in Sherbrooke or Quebec City. Some people here have good incomes because they are federal or provincial civil servants, but others are living on welfare."

The rate of crime against children in Gatineau is partly related to unemployment, lack of education and the stress that families feel, Dionne said.

This may explain why relatively affluent and well-educated Ottawa appears to be one of the safer cities for children in the country.

Dionne said the Statistics Canada study on violence against children and youths is based on police reports and does not provide an interpretation of differing crime rates. He said more studies are need to determine why the rates of violence against children differ across Canada.

O lado ruim de morar em Gatineau...

A verdade tem que ser dita: morar em Gatineau parece ser bom, mas nada é perfeito.

Um dos grandes problemas que sempre informo a todos que querem vir morar aqui é a questao do atendimento hospitalar, que infelizmente é um dos piores em toda regiao.

Já nao bastasse o fato de ser praticamente impossivel encontrar um medico de familia para atendimento clinico, nas emergencias de Gatineau voce tem que esperar a media de 20 (vinte) horas para ser atendido. Se for correr para Ottawa, a sua carteira d’Assurance Maladie pode nao ser aceita e voce ter de pagar tudo em cash para ser – talvez – reembolsado tres meses depois em 50% dos gastos pela Regie d’Assurance Maladie du Quebec.

Malgré des améliorations marquées à plusieurs niveaux dans la dernière année, les temps d'attente aux urgences de Hull et Gatineau demeurent « honteux et dangereux », estime le Dr Alain Tanguay, coordonnateur des urgences du Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Gatineau (CSSSG).

Le temps d'attente moyen passé sur civière avant d'être hospitalisé a légèrement diminué en 2009-2010. La même chose est vraie pour la proportion de patients qui doivent séjourner 48 heures à l'urgence avant d'avoir accès à un lit aux étages. Malgré cela, il y a encore un patient sur cinq qui se présente aux urgences de Hull et Gatineau qui se découragera et quittera avant d'être vu pas un médecin, selon le Dr Tanguay.

« Il y a des améliorations, mais pas de raison d'être satisfait, lance le Dr Tanguay en entrevue avec LeDroit. Notre plan de désengorgement des urgences mis en place il y a deux ans nous a permis de faire du progrès, mais ça devient difficile de faire plus sans l'appui du reste des médecins aux étages. »

Rôle à jouer

Le Dr Tanguay explique que les urgentologues sont maintenant plus sélectifs et rigoureux dans l'utilisation qu'ils font des civières à l'urgence. La limite de ce qu'ils pouvaient accomplir pour améliorer la situation est toutefois atteinte. Les médecins aux étages, omnipraticiens et spécialistes, doivent maintenant accepter qu'ils ont un rôle à jouer pour désengorger les urgences, dit-il.

« C'est malheureux, mais ce n'est pas tout le monde qui accepte de jouer son rôle, ajoute le Dr Tanguay. Il faut amener les différents départements aux étages à gérer plus efficacement la disponibilité des lits. Les médecins doivent devenir plus efficaces pour améliorer la durée de séjour de leurs patients. Actuellement, c'est clair, c'est la situation aux étages qui est responsable de l'engorgement des urgences de l'établissement. »

Le Dr Tanguay convient que les médecins généralistes sont épuisés et débordés. « Leur charge de travail est très importante, dit-il. Il n'est pas rare de voir un médecin devoir s'occuper de 30 patients au cours d'un même quart de travail. La responsabilité de mieux gérer l'utilisation des lits d'hospitalisation leur revient quand même. La direction de l'établissement doit aussi les appuyer là-dedans. Les taux d'occupation des urgences sont inacceptables. Il faut réduire le temps d'attente avant qu'un patient de l'urgence puisse être hospitalisé ou vu en consultation par un spécialiste. »

Améliorations nécessaires

La situation est telle que les deux nouvelles urgences actuellement en construction à Hull et Gatineau ne changeront rien s'il n'y a pas d'amélioration aux étages. « Tout ce qu'on ferait c'est congestionner, progressivement, nos nouvelles urgences, soutient le Dr Tanguay. De la façon dont ça fonctionne actuellement, on me donnerait l'espace d'un terrain de football et je réussirais à le congestionner. »

Le coordonnateur des urgences demande aussi à la direction du CSSSG de trouver une façon d'ouvrir les lits de débordement aux étages, comme cela était prévu dans le plan de désengorgement. Le manque de personnel infirmier rend toutefois impossible une telle mesure pour l'instant. « Une urgence qui est saine parvient toujours à garder quelques lits en réserve pour les cas les plus critiques, même lors des périodes de grand achalandage, explique-t-il. Ce n'est pas avec des taux d'occupation de 200 % que nous allons réussir à faire ça. »

Gatineau, cidade vizinha de Ottawa, atrai cada vez mais brasileiros

Recentemente, o "Canadá Direto" apresentou uma reportagem sobre as cidades mais atraentes do Canadá para novos moradores, segundo resultados de uma pesquisa do Conference Board of Canada.
Das 27 cidades comparadas, apenas seis receberam “A”, a nota máxima. Entre elas está Ottawa, a capital do Canadá.
Do outro lado do rio Des Outaouais, colada em Ottawa, estáGatineau. A cidade quebequense recebeu a nota “C” na classificação do Conference Board, mas, mesmo assim, tem atraído muitos imigrantes, vários deles brasileiros.
Esta nova onda de imigrantes qualificados e dispostos a falar inglês e francês chegou à cidade nos útimos 3 anos, incentivada pelo Programa de Imigração do Governo Provincial do Québec. A rede de solidariedade dos brasileiros de Gatineau começa no Brasil e continua após a chegada no Canadá.
Hoje no "Canadá Direto", nós vamos conhecer um pouco destas duas cidades localizadas em províncias distintas (Ottawa fica em Ontario e Gatineau no Québec), mas intimamente ligadas.
Gilda Salomone conversou com três brasileiros que vivem na região.

Are you looking for a job in Canada’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector and residing in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) of Ontario? If so, check out the Integrated Work Experience Strategy (IWES) pilot program! IWES is part of ICTC’s Immigration Initiatives and aims to strengthen Canada’s competitive advantage in the global ICT market by providing training in workplace cultural intelligence, workplace communication, business networking and community connections.

The IWES program is available to unemployed or underemployed ICT internationally educated professionals (IEPs) who are legally entitled to work in Canada and are recent Canadian immigrants. Eligible IEPs must have a background in ICT/IT, be committed to completing an intensive program, and keen to work in Canada’s ICT sector.

The IWES program consists of a six-week training session, including full-time classroom training and interactive workshops, followed by guided work experience. It allows IEPs to identify and improve skills which are necessary for successfully integrating into the Canadian ICT workplace.

Notably, the program prepares candidates for specific occupations and arranges work placements with ICT employers. So far, 29 IEPs have participated in the program in Vancouver. Applications are now being accepted until February 15, 2010 12:00 PM EST for the first intake of this program in Ontario.

O Conselho de Informatica do Canada lancou no dia 27 de janeiro um novo programa chamado “Ferramenta de Prepacao para a Realidade Canadense”. Este novo programa é bilingue (ingles/frances) e se trata de uma ferramente de auto-avaliacao online destinada a profissionais da area de informatica (TI) que queiram imigrar para o Canada ou que recem-imigraram para o pais.

O objetivo desse programa é justamente avaliar e preparar os profissionais de TI estrangeiros para as exigencias do mercado de informatica no Canada, sua melhor integracao perante os desafios do novo emprego, o inevitavel choque cultural que muitos profissionais sentem ao comecar a trabalhar para uma empresa canadense, a diversidade que se encontra nessa area, alem de abordar questoes importantes sobre a comunicacao no ambiente de trabalho e as competencias que os profissionais devem ter para poderem passar por qualquer processo de selecao no pais (preparacao de curriculos e entrevistas de emprego à moda canadense).

Essa ferramenta chama-se “Canada Readiness Tool” em ingles, ou “Outil préparatoire canadien” em frances e esta’ disponivel em modulos online nas duas linguas. O programa esta disponivel no web site do Conselho de Informatica do Canada gratuitamente para qualquer interessado de qualquer parte do mundo. Basta somente se cadastrar para ter acesso ao programa.

A grande vantagem dessa ferramenta é que ela é voltada especificamente para profissionais da area de informatica.

ICTC Launches Canada Readiness Tool and Immigration Initiatives

First-of-its-kind Tool Helps Global ICT Talent Integrate into the Canadian Labour Market

Ottawa, ON – On January 27, 2010, the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) launched the Canada Readiness Tool, the most robust tool developed to date to help internationally educated ICT professionals (IEPs) from around the world integrate more effectively into the Canadian workforce. Funded by the Government of Canada’s Foreign Credential Recognition Program, the Canada Readiness Tool is a bilingual, online competency-based self-assessment tool that educates IEPs about the three C’s for success in the Canadian ICT workplace – Culture, Communication and Competencies.

“Our Government is taking concrete steps to facilitate the integration of newcomers into the work force so that they can put their skills to work sooner, helping to strengthen the labour market and improve the standard of living of all Canadians,” said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. “Attracting and retaining the best international talent to address existing and future labour market challenges is critical to Canada’s long-term economic success.”

After incorporating feedback from partners and ICT IEPs overseas in India, China and the Philippines and across Canada in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, the Canada Readiness Tool offers three self-assessment modules on Workplace Culture, Workplace Communication, and Workplace Competencies as well as guides on resumé building, interview preparation, and the Canadian ICT labour market.

“The Canada Readiness Tool is the first tool of its kind developed to meet the needs of the ICT workforce in Canada,” said Paul D. Swinwood, President of ICTC. “Through our innovative Immigration Initiatives that include programs, resources, and tools such as the Canada Readiness Tool, ICTC is paving the way towards helping global ICT talent integrate successfully into the Canadian ICT sector.”

The tool was launched at ICTC’s 2010 Immigration Initiatives Partnership Celebration in Ottawa, which recognized the successful launch of multiple programs, resources and tools developed for IEPs and employers, including a highly effective pilot bridge-to-work program (IWES), pilot mentorship programs, and various guides for IEPs. These have been developed with the integral support of partners and stakeholders under the Internationally Educated Professionals (IEP) Integration Initiative project, as part of ICTC’s Immigration Initiatives. Leaders from industry, government, and immigrant serving agencies attended the event to celebrate the successes of the IEP Integration Initiative and launch of the Canada Readiness Tool.

Ottawa (Ontario) – Le 27 janvier 2010, le Conseil des technologies de l’information et des communications (CTIC) a lancé l’Outil préparatoire canadien, l’outil le plus robuste mis au point à ce jour pour les professionnels formés à l’étranger du domaine des TIC en vue de faciliter leur intégration à la main-d’œuvre canadienne. Financé par le Programme de reconnaissance des titres de compétences étrangers du gouvernement du Canada, l’Outil préparatoire canadien est un outil d’auto-évaluation bilingue en ligne axé sur les compétences qui renseigne les professionnels formés à l’étranger sur les trois « C » pour réussir sur le marché du travail canadien – la culture, la communication et les compétences.

« Notre gouvernement prend des mesures concrètes pour faciliter l’intégration des nouveaux arrivants au marché du travail afin qu’ils puissent mettre plus rapidement à profit leurs compétences au Canada, ce qui permet de renforcer le marché du travail et de rehausser le niveau de vie de tous les Canadiens », a dit l’honorable Diane Finley, ministre des Ressources humaines et du Développement des compétences. « Attirer et conserver les travailleurs étrangers les plus talentueux pour faire face aux défis actuels et futurs liés au marché du travail revêt une importance capitale pour ce qui est d’assurer la prospérité économique du Canada à long terme. »

Des commentaires provenant de partenaires et de professionnels formés à l’étranger dans le domaine des TIC en Inde, en Chine et les Philippines et dans l’ensemble du Canada à Montréal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa ont été intégrés à l’Outil préparatoire canadien. Cet outil offre trois modules d’auto-évaluation sur la culture au travail, la communication dans le milieu de travail et les compétences au travail ainsi que des guides sur la rédaction de curriculum vitae, la préparation d’entrevues et le marché canadien du travail dans les TIC.

« L’Outil préparatoire canadien est un outil novateur mis au point pour répondre aux besoins de la main-d’œuvre des TIC au Canada » , a déclaré Paul D. OTTAWA – October 7, 2009 – A new initiative by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) is set to improve the integration of internationally educated professionals (IEPs) into the Canadian information and communications technology (ICT) workforce. ICTC’s Workshops Online: Immigration to Integration have been developed in English for IEPs in Canada and overseas, along with stakeholders providing services to IEPs internationally and nationally across Canada, including visa officers, immigrant serving agencies, immigration officers, settlement and employment counsellors.

Workshops Online will teach essential knowledge about working in Canada, including the process of coming to Canada, what Canadian ICT employers need, and resources available to develop technical, business, language, and workplace communication competencies. This initiative will further establish Canada as a leader in the attraction, retention and integration of IEPs in the ICT sector.

“Attracting skilled and dedicated newcomers to Canada in the field of information and communications technology will contribute to Canada’s future prosperity and success,” said Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism.

As an international educational tool, ICTC’s Workshops Online will help to ensure IEPs are better prepared and informed about Canada, including regional differences regarding employment opportunities in the ICT sector. According to ICTC’s most recent Outlookfindings, the Canadian ICT sector will need to recruit between 15,800 and 22,350 ICT workers each year between 2008 and 2015. IEPs will account for 30% or more of the annual supply of ICT professionals.

"ICTC’s Workshops Online will be an indispensable transition resource for IEPs whether they are planning to come to Canada or are here already," said ICTC President Paul D. Swinwood while announcing the launch of Workshops Online today. “It is also a key integration tool designed to help immigration stakeholders orient and assist IEPs throughout the process of adapting to Canada and transitioning into the Canadian ICT workforce.”

LES ATELIERS EN LIGNE DU CTIC PRÉPARENT LES PROFESSIONNELS FORMÉS À L’ÉTRANGER DE L’IMMIGRATION À L’INTÉGRATION AU SECTEUR CANADIEN DES TIC

OTTAWA – 7 octobre 2009 – Une nouvelle initiative du Conseil des technologies de l’information et des communications (CTIC) vise à améliorer l’intégration des professionnels formés à l’étranger (PFÉ) à la main-d’œuvre canadienne des technologies de l’information et des communications (TIC). Les ateliers en ligne : de l’immigration à
l’intégration du CTIC ont été conçus en anglais à l’intention des professionnels formés à l'étranger qui sont au Canada et outre-mer, de même que des intervenants offrant des services aux PFÉ à l’échelle internationale et nationale à la grandeur du Canada, et des agents de visa, des organismes d’aide aux immigrants, des agents d’immigration,
des conseillers en matière d’établissement et d’emploi.

Les ateliers enseigneront des connaissances essentielles pour travailler au Canada, notamment le processus à suivre pour venir au Canada, ce dont ont besoin les employeurs canadiens en TIC et les ressources offertes pour favoriser le perfectionnement des compétences techniques, opérationnelles, linguistiques et en communication au travail. Ce projet permettra de renforcer la position du Canada à titre de chef de file pour attirer, maintenir en poste et intégrer des professionnels formés à l’étranger dans le secteur des TIC.

« Attirer au Canada des nouveaux venus qualifiés et spécialisés dans le domaine des technologies de l’information et des communications contribuera à la prospérité et à la réussite du Canada », a déclaré Jason Kenney, ministre de la Citoyenneté, de l’Immigration et du Multiculturalisme.

En tant qu’outil éducatif international, les ateliers en ligne du CTIC permettront de s’assurer que les professionnels formés à l’étranger seront mieux préparés et informés au sujet du Canada et, tout particulièrement, des différences régionales concernant les possibilités d’emploi dans le secteur des TIC. Selon les plus récentes constatations du rapport Perspective du CTIC, le secteur canadien des TIC devra recruter entre 15 800 et 22 350 travailleurs en TIC chaque année entre 2008 et 2015. Les professionnels formés à l’étranger représenteront 30 % ou plus de l’approvisionnement annuel en professionnels en TIC.

« Les ateliers en ligne du CTIC seront une ressource indispensable en matière de transition pour les professionnels formés à l’étranger, qu’ils prévoient venir au Canada ou qu’ils soient déjà ici », a affirmé le président du CTIC, Paul D. Horário de verão no Canadá e no Brasil

Só para chamar a atenção de todos que no dia 18 de outubro (domingo), no Brasil, o DF e mais 10 Estados vão adiantar o relógio em uma hora por causa do início do horário de verão por lá. A diferença de fuso horário entre Ottawa e Brasília sobe para duas horas a frente para o Brasil.

Já no dia 1º de novembro (domingo), aqui no Canadá, todos os relógios devem ser atrasados em uma hora devido ao fim do horário de verão ("daylight saving time" em inglês ou "l'heure d'été" em francês) em terras canadenses. Desta forma, a diferença de fuso horário entre Ottawa e Brasília subirá para três horas a frente para o Brasil.

O horário de verão no Brasil segue até o dia 21 de fevereiro de 2010. O Canadá volta a mudar o horário de seus relógios no dia 14 de março.

O horário de verão este ano vai começar à 0h de 18 de outubro e vai até à 0h de 21 de fevereiro de 2010. Os relógios terão que ser adiantados em uma hora.

A mudança de horário só vale para os estados do Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul e Distrito Federal.

No ano passado, o período teve início no dia 19 de outubro e durou até 15 de fevereiro deste ano.

Adotado no Brasil desde o verão de 1932, o horário de verão busca o melhor aproveitamento da luz natural, adiantando-se os relógios em uma hora. A medida reduz o consumo de energia elétrica entre 18h e 20h.

Eastern Standard Time (EST) becomes Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), and so forth. Some areas of Canada not using Daylight Saving Time include, Fort St. John, Charlie Lake, Taylor and Dawson Creek in British Columbia, Creston in the East Kootenays, and most of Saskatchewan (except Denare Beach and Creighton).

NEW! In 2007 Daylight Saving Time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. This pattern will be followed by all provinces which observe daylight saving time and each province has amended their legislation to reflect this change. Previously, Canada had observed Daylight Saving Time from the first Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October.

This change in Daylight Saving Time will keep Canada's Daylight Saving Time pattern consistent with the United States which enacted into law a broad energy bill that will extend Daylight Saving Time in the same manner.
Canada uses six primary time zones. From east to west they are Newfoundland Time Zone, Atlantic Time Zone, Eastern Time, Central Time Zone, Mountain Time Zone, and the Pacific Time Zone.

Chaque année, nous accueillons de 3000 à 5000 visiteurs. Le samedi matin est très achalandé en raison de la qualité du choix. Les catégories bandes dessinées, audiovisuel et livres d'enfants sont les plus populaires et sont souvent écoulées avant la fin de la matinée. Toutefois, des centaines de livres sont ajoutés pendant la journée du samedi et le dimanche matin pour renouveler le choix.

Cette activité est un réel succès grâce à la participation de bénévoles. Plus de 50 personnes sont à l'œuvre tout le week-end pour offrir un service de qualité. En tout temps, vous pouvez vous joindre à l'équipe de bénévoles en composant le 819 595-7464 ou en écrivant à duchesne.andre@gatineau.ca.

Each year for nearly two decades, thousands of people have flocked to the Glebe for the annual Great Glebe Garage Sale. This year's event is on Saturday, May 23, 2009 from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

About the Great Glebe Garage Sale

When: The Great Glebe Garage Sale is coming up on Saturday, May 23, 2008 from 9:00am - 3:00pm. (While 9:00am is the "official" start time, sellers and buyers are usually out much earlier.)
Buyers: Given the huge popularity of this event, with people even coming from out of town, safety can be a concern. The Ottawa Police have observed that some streets become so congested that emergency vehicles cannot get through. Please help keep our streets safe by walking or biking rather than driving around, and asking your friends to do the same.
Bring cash: ATM machines empty out early, so bring cash to avoid disappointment.
Sellers: All participants are asked to donate 10% of proceeds to the Ottawa Food Bank. On the day of the sale, Food Bank representatives will drop off contribution envelopes to all participants.
Rain date: The Great Glebe Garage Sale goes rain or shine.

What is the Great Glebe Garage Sale?
It is a community event organized by the Glebe Community Association since 1986. Homeowners in the Glebe are the primary vendors working on their front lawns, driveways and porches. Collectively they make one giant sale that has become an annual community festival attracting thousands of people to the neighbourhood.
What’s the connection with The Ottawa Food Bank?
From the very beginning, the Glebe Community Association has encouraged vendors (and shoppers) to donate some of their proceeds to this important community service. As a registered charitable organization, The Ottawa Food Bank will issue tax receipts for donations of any size. Did you know that 40,000 persons a month use their local food bank?! Last year the Sale generated $8,200 in donations – we’d like to do exceed this total this year!
What will happen if it rains?
The sale will continue rain or shine! There is no rain date for the sale. Vendors are encouraged to plan on using tarps or garages if there is rain in the forecast.
Where is the Glebe?
The Sale is held in the city of Ottawa in ‘the Glebe’, the neighbourhood bordered by Bronson Avenue, the Queensway (417), and the Canal. A number 1 or 7 OCTRANSPO bus going south on Bank Street will take you into the heart of the Glebe.
How do I register as a vendor?
There is no official registration, however there are restrictions as to where you can set up your sale.
Can I set up a table on the sidewalk in front of my apartment building or in a local park?
Absolutely NOT! Vending on public property such as sidewalks, boulevards, roads, and parkland is illegal without a permit and you may be ticketed by Ottawa by-law officers.
What are some tips for a successful garage sale?
Set up early so that you are prepared for those early birds! Price all your items, either individually or in groups (eg. books 25 cents). Display items on tables or in boxes according to type and/or price. Have a cash box or change apron with lots of coins for change. In the case of large items that can’t be carried away, an impromptu sales receipt can be drawn up with a deposit and an exchange of telephone numbers to hold the item until the traffic has dwindled.
What about parking?
Parking is limited at the best of times! We encourage you to walk, ride your bike or take the bus for best access. If you must drive, kindly park your car and walk in the neighbourhood rather than cruising in your car to reduce congestion. The amount of pedestrian traffic makes driving dangerous for everyone. Corpus Christie School and Mutchmor Public School (both at Fourth Avenue and Lyon Street) are selling additional parking space. Parking will also be available at Landsdowne Park. If you’re a Glebe resident, try to park your vehicle off the street to make room for the many visitors we expect again this year.
Are there any designated no parking zones?
All the usual parking rules are in effect. Please check the posting of parking signs and insure that you are not blocking a fire hydrant or driveway. To ensure emergency routes stay clear, the following streets will be marked as tow-away zones: Fifth Avenue (from Bank to O’Connor), O’Connor, Monkland and Metcalfe. Parking enforcement will also concentrate on no stopping zones and double parking.
Are there ATM machines nearby?
Yes. However they empty out early, so remember to bring cash with you.
How can I reduce my environmental impact?
Vendors - please place a garbage can by the curb for litter. With the large crowds this event attracts, there can be a large amount of litter produced. At the end of the day, clean up around your property and ensure you don’t leave debris on the street. Shoppers - please hold on to your litter until you see a garbage can and then stash the trash.
What about access to public washrooms?
There are public washroom facilities available on the second level of Fifth Avenue Court (Fifth and Bank Street). The Glebe Community Centre (Third and Lyon) and St. Matthew’s church at 217 First Avenue (near Bank St.) will also be open to the public.
How do I donate to the Ottawa Food Bank?
On the day of the sale, Ottawa Food Bank volunteers are in the area with a vendor kit that provides sale information and a form for making donations to the Ottawa Food Bank. You can also drop off a cheque to the Glebe Community Centre up until Tuesday May 29th. Patrick McGahern Books at 783 Bank Street will also be accepting donations on the day of the sale. A maneira correta de espirrar no Canada'...

O assunto hoje é nojento, mas necessário: A maneira correta de espirar de acordo com o código de conduta e higiene dos canadenses.

Apesar de já ter testemunhado cenas escabrosas de canadenses (principalmente québecois) assoando o nariz em público, dentro de ônibus, no escritório, nos cafés... hoje me deparo com uma matéria educativa no Jornal 24 Hours de Ottawa e também com um vídeo educativo na Internet que explica como você deve proceder para evitar a disseminação do vírus da gripe, principalmente o da gripe suína – que atinge não somente quem é “porco”, mas também quem anda “limpinho”.

Por isso, se você não quiser chamar a atenção dos outros, espirre com classe sobre a manga de sua camisa (é o que se recomenda) para evitar de passar o vírus para a suas mãos e daí por diante... ou então ande com um arsenal de guardanapos Kleenex e mais aquele gel desinfetante para as mãos...

Agora, se você está rodeado de gente chata e quer ter um minuto de paz e privacidade em seu cantinho, eu recomendo você a dar um espirro bem alto e forte para a sua frente, pegar um lenço de pano, assoar o nariz escandalosamente e começar a dizer a seguinte frase: “Oye, por la Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, ¿qué pasa? ¡¡¡Siento que estoy con gripe!!!

... Pronto, tenho a certeza de que ninguém vai ficar por perto ou ao seu redor!

The British are doing it better.

While I prefer the original English version of The Office to the NBC version, I’m not really an anglophile. But when Mother England’s right, she’s right.

Amidst worries of spreading swine flu, now called H1N1, Ottawa Public Health is encouraging residents to wash their hands properly and frequently, stay home when you’re sick and cough and sneeze into your sleeve instead of your hands.

Sick people staying home and clean hands are crucial for quelling the spread of illness. But this sneezing and hacking into your sleeve business is another story.

In 2006, Maine ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Ben Lounsbury created the educational video “Why Don’t We Do It In Our Sleeves.”

The five-minute video used humour to demonstrate the cough and sneeze guidelines accepted by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s bad to cough and sneeze into your hands and then touch other people, phones, doorknobs, elevator buttons and other shared surfaces.

By concentrating your expelled germs into your shirt sleeves, viruses are less likely to spread.

The problem is technique. I’ve seen people cough into the general direction of their shoulders, elbows or biceps. Most of the germs are expelled into the air.

You’ve got to make full mouth-on-shirt contact. Women wearing makeup, especially lipstick and foundation, are hesitant to do this, particularly while wearing a white garment.

One woman at my gym coughed into the general direction of her bare arm. If she’d coughed into her hands, she could have left her cardio machine and immediately used the hand sanitizer provided on the wall.

That’s why I prefer the British approach. AUK public health campaign urges people to “Catch it, bin it, kill it.” Sneeze into a clean Kleenex, throw it into the garbage and wash your hands.

Lacking Kleenex, unless you’ve mastered the full mouth-on-shirt technique, I still think it’s better to trap the germs in your hands and wash them.

Stories of landed skilled immigrants searching for job opportunities in vain, coupled with the current world economic turbulence, have become common in Canada recently. Undoubtedly immigrants face unexpected challenges living in a different country and culture, mostly when it seems that economic factors are not helping. However, this is not the case for Jean Roberth Souza. He has a very different story to tell us exactly in a moment when he is celebrating just one year since arriving in Canada.

In March 2008, Jean Roberth moved to Ottawa from Brazil plenty of dreams and expectations. His personal immigration project had finally reached what he had considered the final phase: landing in Canada.

As a fact, it was the initial phase of a new life. It was also time for Jean Roberth to test and experience everything he had learned and studied about Canada before his long trip north.

Actually Jean Roberth quickly found a temporary job in the communications field with a crown corporation in his second month in Ottawa, but after many CVs, interviews, networking and outreach.

Later, he found another temporary opportunity in a community-based project for immigrants. And since December 2008, Jean Roberth joined the Information and Communications Technology Council as Client Tracking Officer.

“Much has happened in the past year and I believe that I was very successful finding good opportunities in Ottawa due mostly to the intensive preparation I had before coming to Canada. The more prepared you are, the easier you will adapt to a new culture. I had spent almost two years analyzing the local job market, job offers, trends in my professional area, and trying to adapt myself culturally to the requirements here,” says Jean Roberth. “Another important aspect of my adaptation process to Canada was the support I received from immigrant serving agencies and their employability programs. Without them, the beginning wouldn’t be easy.”

De nos jours, des cas d’immigrants instruits qu’on a accueillis au Canada et qui cherchent en vain des possibilités d’emploi dans un contexte d’annonces scabreuses de mises à pied causées par les soubresauts de l’économie mondiale sont devenues monnaie courante au pays. Sans l’ombre d’un doute, les immigrants doivent surmonter les nombreux défi s qui surgissent lorsqu’ils arrivent dans une nouvelle culture sur une nouvelle terre d’accueil, surtout lorsque les facteurs économiques ne semblent pas favorables.

Cela n’a toutefois pas été le lot de Jean Roberth Souza, un employé du CTIC. C’est une version totalement différente qu’il a à nous raconter au moment même où il célèbre le premier anniversaire de son arrivée au Canada.

En mars 2008, Jean Roberth quitte le Brésil pour s’établir au Canada, rempli de rêves et d’attentes. Il s’apprête à mettre le point final à son projet d’immigration au Canada: son avion se pose sur une piste au Canada. Un aboutissement qui marque le début d’une toute nouvelle vie. Arrive alors, pour Jean Roberth, le moment d’observer de visu la mine de connaissances qu’il a acquis sur le Canada avant d’entreprendre ce long périple vers les terres du Nord.

Dès le deuxième mois de son arrivée, Jean Roberth a rapidement occupé un poste temporaire dans le domaine des communications au sein d’une société d’État qui a pignon sur rue à Ottawa, non pas sans avoir au préalable passé de nombreuses entrevues et distribué largement son C.V. Il a ensuite profité d’une autre occasion d’emploi temporaire dans un projet communautaire de services d’aide aux immigrants. Et depuis décembre 2008, Jean Roberth poursuit sa carrière au CTIC, à titre d’agent de suivi de la clientèle.

« Tout s’est produit au cours de la dernière année. Mes démarches pour trouver de bonnes occasions d’emploi à Ottawa se sont révélées fructueuses grâce, surtout, à la préparation intensive qui a précédé mon départ pour le Canada. Plus on est préparé, plus il est facile de s’adapter à une nouvelle culture. J’ai passé presque deux ans à étudier le marché local de l’emploi, à suivre les tendances dans mon champ professionnel et à essayer de m’adapter aux exigences du milieu sur le plan culturel» raconte Jean Roberth. Le soutien que m’ont offert les organismes d’aide aux immigrants et les programmes de préparation à l’emploi constitue un autre facteur important du processus d’intégration au Canada. Sans leur apport, il serait difficile de prendre son élan » ajoute-t-il.

Historias de imigrantes bem qualificados que chegaram há pouco tempo ao país à procura por oportunidades de trabalho em vão, aliadas com a atual turbulência econômica mundial, se tornaram um tópico comum do dia-a-dia no Canadá. Sem sombra de dúvida, os imigrantes encaram desafios inesperados ao viver em um novo país e em uma cultura bem diferente, principalmente em um momento em que os fatores econômicos nao parecem ajudar muito. Entretanto, esse nao é o caso de Jean Roberth Souza, funcionário do Conselho de Tecnologias da Informação e da Comunicação (CTIC). Ele tem uma história bem diferente para nos contar exatamente em um momento em que ele está comemorando somente um ano de chega ao Canadá.

Em março de 2008, Jean Roberth se mudava para Ottawa vindo do Brasil cheio de sonhos e expectativas. Seu projeto pessoal de imigração tinha finalmente chegado ao que ele considerava a fase final: Desembarcar no Canadá. Na verdade, isso era a fase inicial de uma nova vida. Era também a hora de Jean Roberth testar e experimentar tudo o que tinha aprendido sobre o Canadá antes de sua longa viagem para as terras do Norte.

De fato, Jean Roberth encontrou rapidamente um emprego temporário na área de comunicacao em uma autarquia governamental canadense já em seu segundo mês de residência no Canadá, mas isso só ocorreu após a distribuicao de muitos Curricula Vitae e por ter passado por muitas entrevistas de seleção, feito seus contatos profissionais e se apresentado bem ao mercado de trabalho.

Mais tarde, ele encontrou outra oportundade de trabalho temporário em um projeto comunitário de serviço de apoio para imigrantes. E desde dezembro de 2008, Jean Roberth iniciou sua carreira no CTIC no cargo de Assessor de Monitoramento da Clientela.

“Muito aconteceu no último ano e eu acredito que eu tive muito sucesso ao encontrar boas oportunidades em Ottawa devido principalmente à intensa preparação que tive antes de vir para o Canadá. Quanto mais preparado você está, mais fácil fica para você se adaptar à nova cultura. Tinha passado quase os últimos dois anos estudando o mercado local de trabalho e os tipos de empregos disponíveis, analisando as tendências na minha área profissional e também tentando me adaptar as exigências do mercado sob o ponto de vista cultural,” explica Jean Roberth. “Outro importante aspecto do meu processo de adaptação ao Canadá foi o apoio que recebi das agências de apoio aos imigrantes e dos programas de preparação para o trabalho. Sem eles, o meu início não teria sido fácil.”

Are you Internationally Educated? If so you should congratulate yourself. You are brave and courageous. It takes a very special person who can leave their country and start over in Canada. The following are the top ten ways to find work in Canada:

A good way to learn about your occupation in Canada is to have information interviews with people who are working in your field, associations and licensing bodies. An information interview is when you meet with someone and ask them questions about what they like about their job, dislike and the future potential to name a few.

This will help you become better informed about the industry. There are other ways to find out about your field such as websites and printed reports. However, talking to an expert or someone already employed will give you a greater insight.

Certain terminology in your occupation may be different in Canada. You may want to go to the library and the Internet to learn the language your industry uses.

Start to reformat your résumé to a Canadian style. Information that may have been relevant in your own country may not be relevant in Canada. In some other countries it’s normal to write your marital status, age and religion. In Canada this should not be mentioned. We have the Ontario Human Rights Code, which protects us against discrimination. Also, have someone look over your résumé before you send it out. You can go to a non-profit employment service and have your résumé critiqued for free.

80% of the jobs are unadvertised and in the ‘Hidden Job Market’. Tapping into the ‘Hidden Job Market’ involves a lot of networking and making cold calls. These two methods may seem a little intimidating but they are worth trying. 20% of the job market consists of jobs that are advertised on the internet, newspapers and trade magazines. I recommend using these methods a little bit during your job search. However, if you focus on the ‘Hidden Job Market’, there’s less competition.

In your own country you probably had a big network of contacts, however in Canada your network may be small. I have a challenge for you. It’s time to re-build your network in Canada. Socialize with people, attend job search workshops offered by your community, volunteer, attend job fairs and join associations. Talk to everyone! Your family doctor, your children’s teacher or a priest may be able to help connect you to people. Remember that people like to help other people.

Unfortunately you may not be able to have the same job in Canada right away. Try to find a job that’s related to your field of expertise. If you are an engineer find a job as a technician or technologist. Research the positions that are related to your occupation and apply to them. Getting your foot in the door of a company is a great start. Once in, you will probably be able to apply to internal openings

Through volunteering, co-op, on-the-job programs and job trials you will be able to prove your skills and abilities to a Canadian employer, learn about the Canadian workplace culture, gain ‘Canadian Experience’ and build your network. Use your availability to volunteer. If a company doesn’t have current openings say, “I understand that you do not have current openings but I would love to volunteer for you company.”

When asked ‘Do you have Canadian Experience?’ don’t just say no and feel that you have been rejected and that all employers are looking for this so called ‘Canadian Experience’. Tell the employer how your skills are similar to the skills that they are looking for. Also tell them how your international experience will help to benefit the company.

Prepare yourself for an interview by researching the company, position and yourself. Sell your skills to the employer by telling them stories of your accomplishments and achievements. You are a small company selling your most valuable product – yourself.

Stay positive, be persistent, proactive, follow-up with all contacts and maintain your motivation level. If you keep trying, good things will come. You can do it and you will do it. Good Luck.

Top 10 Ways to Find a Job in Canada

Learn as much as you can about a job you want by asking someone who works in that field for an “information interview” (a friendly talk that gives you a chance to ask them questions about the industry and the job you are trying to get).

Every industry in Canada uses special words (called “jargon”) for machines, documents and routines that are used in that workplace. It is a good idea to go to the library and the internet to learn the jargon your industry uses.

Create an English-language résumé (see “What is a Résumé and Why Do I Need One?”, if you don’t have one. You may find that some information that was required in your own country should not be included in your Canadian résumé. For instance, in Canada, your marital status, age and religion should not be mentioned. You should also have someone read your résumé before sending it out. Most non-profit employment services will do this for free.

Only one out of five jobs is advertised on the internet, newspapers or trade magazines. All other jobs are in the ‘Hidden Job Market’, which means they are not advertised. The best ways to find out about these jobs are networking and making cold calls. “Networking” is a word for getting to know people in the industry. A “cold call” is when you go to a company that is not advertising any jobs, to ask if they are hiring. This can be scary, but since not as many people apply for these jobs, you will have a better chance to be hired.

In your own country you may know many people in your field, but in Canada, you must build a new “network”. Meet as many people as you can by volunteering, joining associations, and attending job search workshops and job fairs. Talk to everyone! Your family doctor or your children’s teacher may be able to introduce you to people who can help you. Remember that people like to help other people.

If you had a good job in your own country, you may not be able to get the same job in Canada right away. Look for jobs that are related to the work you know how to do. Once you are working for a company, you will have a better chance to find out about and get the job you really want.

Through volunteering, co-op, on-the-job programs and job trials (see “Learn While You Work” on page 16) you will be able to prove your skills to a Canadian employer, learn about the Canadian workplace, gain ‘Canadian Experience’ and build your network. If you are able to volunteer, this can help you get your first job. If you have no ‘Canadian Experience’ do not feel bad. Explain to the employer how your skills are similar to the skills that they are looking for. Also tell them how your international experience can help the company.

Before an interview, learn as much as you can about the company and the job. Sell yourself to the employer by telling them stories about what you have done.

If you keep trying, good things will come. You can do it and you will do it.

Malgré son image de région ennuyeuse, Ottawa-Gatineau domine les palmarès des meilleurs endroits au Canada où vivre, selon Richard Florida, l'un des urbanistes les plus connus au monde.

Dans la récente édition révisée de son best-seller intitulé Who's Your City?, le professeur de l'Université de Toronto, place Ottawa-Gatineau parmi les meilleures villes pour les jeunes professionnels, les travailleurs en milieu de carrière, les familles et les retraités.

«J'ai visité Ottawa-Gatineau à quelques reprises et, il y a 20 ans, tout comme Washington, c'était une région grise et ennuyeuse. Plus maintenant. Ottawa-Gatineau a maintenant de bons restaurants et une scène artistique et culturelle vibrante», a déclaré Richard Florida lors d'un entretien téléphonique avec LeDroit mardi.

«Dans l'ensemble de nos recherches, c'est la région qui se place le mieux dans nos palmarès. Ottawa-Gatineau figure parmi les top-5 dans toutes les catégories.»

Dans son palmarès, M. Florida tient compte de plusieurs facteurs, incluant les services offerts dans une ville, la croissance économique d'une région, le coût de la vie, ainsi que la scène artistique, culturelle et sportive. Il puise également diverses données provenant de Statistique Canada.

Toronto, Montréal et Vancouver sont de superbes villes avec plusieurs qualités, a par ailleurs reconnu M. Floride, mais aucune d'entre elles n'a dominé autant qu'Ottawa-Gatineau.

L'urbaniste cite notamment les espaces verts à Ottawa et à Gatineau, qui contribuent à la qualité de vie dans la région, mais aussi - et surtout - la présence stabilisatrice des emplois fédéraux.

«Si vous me demandez quelles sont les deux endroits qui résistent le mieux à la récession en Amérique du Nord, c'est Ottawa et Washington. Il n'y a pas de grosses chutes du prix des maisons dans ces deux villes, ni d'importantes hausses du taux de chômage, et l'économie locale continue de croître.»

Dans plusieurs catégories, Ottawa-Gatineau surpassent de grandes villes comme Toronto, Montréal et Vancouver, de grandes agglomérations perçues comme étant plus dynamiques. Ottawa-Gatineau trône au sommet du palmarès des meilleures villes pour les gens en milieu de carrière, pour les familles et pour les retraités. La région est en deuxième position de la meilleure ville pour les baby boomers dont les enfants ont quitté le foyer (les 'empty nesters', comme disent les Anglophones) et elle se retrouve troisième pour les gens célibataires.

Pour ces célibataires, c'est Calgary qui est la meilleure ville au Canada, selon Richard Florida. Montréal, quant à elle, se place au cinquième rang des meilleures villes canadiennes pour les retraités et en 10e position pour ce qui est des travailleurs à la mi-carrière et pour les parents dont les enfants ont quitté le foyer.

Contrairement à d'autres classements publiés ces dernières années par d'autres groupes et experts, M. Florida n'a pas placé Vancouver au sommet. «Vancouver est une ville spectaculaire. Je suis le premier à le dire. Mais c'est une ville où le coût de la vie est très élevé et où les occasions d'emplois ne sont pas aussi nombreuses qu'à Ottawa-Gatineau ou Toronto.»

Considéré par certains comme un gourou controversé de l'urbanisme, et comme un visionnaire par d'autres, Richard Florida martèle le concept de la «classe créative», ces emplois qui relèvent du savoir et de la création et non de la production. Selon lui, environ 43 % des emplois à Ottawa-Gatineau relèvent de cette classe créative, le taux le plus élevé au Canada.

M. Florida est l'auteur du livre The Rise of The Creative Class et de Cities and the Creative Class. M. Florida estime que l'endroit où l'on choisi de vivre est la décision la plus importante dans une vie, une décision qui influence notre cheminement et nos chances de succès.

Estive ontem em visita ao Centro de Servicos da Comunidade Chinesa no centro de Ottawa e fiquei admirado com a quantidade de cursos e servicos oferecidos pelo Centro.

Veja bem, esse Centro atende todo e qualquer imigrante residente em Ottawa, independente de ser de origem chinesa ou nao. Ha um oferecimento gratuito de cursos de ingles, de ingles tecnico para profissionais de informatica, de computador, de preparo para o mercado de trabalho, aconselhamento profissional, alem de creche. Ha’ inclusive servicos especificos para a comunidade judaica e tambem para a comunidade muculmana na cidade.
